Overview:-
As we know Thermodynamics is a very important subject for mechanical branch students. According to university syllabus thermodynamics is divided in 5 units. Scoring is not easy in thermodynamics. Students will have to work hard to gain good marks. In semester exam numerical portion contain much weight than theoretical portion. Students can get good marks if they have command on numerical portion .
Units wise important topics:-
First unit Fundamental concepts & definition is very easy and also scoring unit.
- Zeroth law of thermodynamics
- Microscopic ¯oscopic approaches
- Thermodynamic equilibrium
- Quasi static process
- Numerical on heat and work topic.
Second unit First law of thermodynamics is conceptual &scoring unit .
- Calculation of work in various processes .
- Non flow work &flow work .
- Joules experiment
- First law applied to open systems .
- Steady flow energy equation
- Throttling process
- PMM-1 etc .
Third unit Second law of thermodynamics is difficult than previous units but scoring .
- Heat engine ,heat pump ,
- Refrigerator kelvin plank statement & Clausius statement of second law of thermodynamics .
- Carnot theorem & it’s corollaries, equivalence of two statements of 2nd law of thermodynamics .
Fourth unit Entropy, availability & reversibility is very interesting &scoring unit . This unit contain derivation part as well as numerical part .
- Clausius inequality .
- Concept of entropy .
- TDS equation.
- Available &unavailable energy .
- Availability & reversibility.
Fifth unit Properties of steam is easy unit and student can get good marks from this unit.
- Property of steam .
- Triple point, critical point, sub cooled liquid.
- Saturation states.
- Phase transformation .
- PVT diagram.
NOTE :- Numerical units are 2nd, 3rd & 4th for scoring good marks .
TIPS FOR PREPARATION :-
1- Divide subject units into three parts (unit in which you are good ,units in which you are average, units in which you are totally confused ).
2- While studying carry the syllabus with them .
3- Take previous year question papers to see the pattern .
4- 2 hours per day is sufficient for getting good marks in this subject .
